The Trail-manufacture of LNG Railway Transport Train

      It is reported that LNG tank railway transportation train was put into trial production nearly on December 14, 2015 under the approval of State Railway Administration, whose trial production will have come off in 2016 at the soonest in accordance with the project progress.
      Currently, there are primarily 2 transportation methods for China inland natural gas. In accordance with ICIS statistical data, pipe transportation gas accounts for about 92% of the total gas transmission volume by far; on the other hand, tank car transportation LNG only accounts for about 8% of the total gas transmission volume.
    CRRC Corporation Limited (CRRC) started formally to establish the LNG tank transportation trains in July 2015; and the trial production was carried out by Xi’an Railway Transportation and Equipment Co., Ltd. and CRRC Yangtze Co., Ltd., respectively.
    The special LNG transportation trains of CRRC are tank cars, the volume of a single tank which is > 100m3 is suitable for large mass long distance transportation. The railway transportation LNG train tested in Golmud-Lhasa Segment on August 13 ~ 29, 2013 is in the tank box form (the volume of a single tank: 42.5m3, and such transportation mass being relatively small). In accordance with prediction of CRRC, the LNG railway transportation cost is among RMB 0.37~0.42 Yuan/(ton·km), which is far lower than the highway transportation cost or even the pipe transportation cost. If the LNG railway transportation would be put into commercial operation on a large scale in China, it shall certainly bring about changing China natural gas transportation mode; at the same time, the primary natural gas resource flow pattern shall also change.
    The related officer of China CRRC said: although the trial production of the tank LNG transportation trains was approved by State Railway Administration, China Railways Corporation was not in full agreement in view of the safety factor; therefore, the future specific railway operation scheme may not be determined. In addition, examination & approval shall be a necessary procedure while the trial production
would be successful; and the additional 2~3 years shall be necessary for the actual operation.
      In view of the current situations, China LNG railway transportation is still under the early research stage; especially, the progress on promotion of LNG railway transportation was basically put off after Tianjin Explosion Accident in 2015. In addition, merging China South Locomotive and China North Locomotive, and internal integration issues shall also influence the project progress to some extent.
      According to information, China economy growth slows down in recent 2 years, and the traditional railway freight market will be also restrained to some extent along with gradually changing the energy consumption structures. Thus, railway transportation companies and railway car manufacturing companies are also anxious for development of new market. On this background, CRRC starts to strive to develop special new type LNG transportation cars.
      In view of the main trends (separation operation of the natural gas pipe network in China), the market insiders begin to worry about the separated pipe network company would bring about new monopoly in future; therefore, multiple competition is hoped to be introduced in the natural gas transportation link. Moreover, the LNG railway transportation mode shall be a relatively feasible choice. If its large-scale commercial operation might come off, it should also bring new vitality to China natural gas transportation market.
